Year 2 RE Curriculum

This overview shows the focus of the Religious Education Curriculum for the year ahead.

Autumn

This term we will be studying the three themes of Domestic Church (Beginnings), Baptism and Confirmation (Signs and Symbols) and Advent and Christmas (Expectations). The children will also spend a week studying Judaism.

This term we will be studying the three themes of Local Church (Books), Eucharist, (Thanksgiving), Lent/Easter (Opportunities).

 

This term we will be studying the three themes of Pentecost (Spread the Word), Reconciliation (Rules), Universal Church (Treasures). The children will also spend a week studying Islam

 

Domestic Church

BEGINNINGS - God is present in every beginning

Pupils will know and understand ‘the many beginnings each day offers.’

Pupils will know and understand God is present in every beginning.

Local Church

BOOKS - The books used in Church

Pupils will know and understand about the different books used at home and in school.

Pupils will know and understand the books used in Church on Sunday by the parish family.

Pentecost

SPREAD THE WORD - Pentecost: a time to spread the Good News

Pupils will know and understand passing on messages.

Pupils will know and understand Pentecost, spreading the Gospel message through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Judaism

PRAYER/HOME  - Shabbat

Pupils will know how a Jewish family gathers for Shabbat.

Pupils will know the importance of Shabbat for the Jewish people - a day of rest: a day for God.

Eucharist

THANKSGIVING - Mass, a special time to thank God

Pupils will know and understand different ways to say thank you.

Pupils will know and understand the Eucharist: the parish family thanks God for Jesus.

Reconciliation / Anointing of the sick

RULES - Reasons for rules in the Christian family

Pupils will know and understand how rules can help at home and in school.

Pupils will know and understand the reasons for rules in the Christian family.

Baptism/Confirmation

SIGNS AND SYMBOLS - Signs and symbols in Baptism

Pupils will know and understand ‘the experience of signs and symbols.’

Pupils will know and understand signs and symbols used in Baptism.

Lent / Easter

OPPORTUNITIES - Lent: an opportunity to start anew

Pupils will know and understand that each day offers opportunities for good.

Pupils will know and understand about Lent, the opportunity to turn towards what is good in preparation for Easter.

Islam

PRAYER/HOME – Wudu

Pupils will know about Wudu – ritual washing, home life, diet and the blessing ritual for a newborn.

Pupils will appreciate the importance of prayer and home for Muslims.

Advent/Christmas

PREPARATIONS - Advent: preparing to celebrate Christmas

Pupils will know and understand about preparing for special times.

Pupils will know and understand that Advent is four weeks of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

Universal Church

TREASURES - God’s treasure; the world

Pupils will know and understand what we treasure.

Pupils will know and understand the world is God’s treasure given to us.
